Specialty fetish clothing made from leather, latex, or PVC needs specific care. Regular detergents are not effective on these materials and can ruin them, so use the right method for each to keep your pieces in great condition for years.

Caring for leather

Start by identifying the type of leather. Most leather clothing is top-grained or protected leather, which has a finished look. To check, drop a bead of water on the surface: if it beads up and leaves no dark mark when wiped away, it is protected leather. Clean protected leather with a water-based leather cleaner, let it dissolve any dirt rather than scrubbing, rinse with water, and finish with a conditioner. Softer suede and semi-aniline leather are more delicate and porous, so use products made specifically for them, treat with a protective spray or cream to prevent staining before you wear them, and always test any new product in a small, hidden area first.

Caring for latex

Before putting latex on, powder your body generously with talc or cornstarch so it slides on easily and does not tear, and be gentle with the thinner, more delicate edges. After wear, simply wash it with water; never use soap, which damages latex. Dust off the powder with a damp cloth for a natural matte finish, or buff on a silicone polish for a high-gloss shine. Store latex on a cloth-covered hanger, or dusted with talc inside a cardboard box. Avoid plastic hangers, which can cause latex to rot.

Caring for PVC

Hand wash PVC with a liquid detergent, rinse, and hang it inside out to dry before turning it right side out. Never put PVC in the dryer: it will melt, and the fumes are toxic. Keep it away from organic solvents, which destroy the material, use a silicone spray if you want extra shine, and store different colors separately so they do not stain one another. If a piece is not actually soiled, you can freshen the lining with a fabric spray and wipe the outside with a damp sponge.
