Glossary

We want you to know what we’re talking about so your experience can be the best possible! Before we talk anymore about electrosex, here’s a quick glossary of terms.

  • Circuit: A complete flow of electricity going from the positive electrode to the negative electrode.
  • Electrode: The pin at the end of the wire is called the electrode. Two wires come out of the electrical unit. One wire has a positive electrical charge and one wire has a negative charge.
  • Uni-Polar: Mono-Polar accessories are often referred to as Uni-Polar. A mono-polar accessory requires that you hook up two uni-polar/mono-polar devices to the body in order to complete the electrical circuit flow through the body.
  • Bi-Polar This accessory is complete and connects the circuit so you will feel the current by gripping the device tightly.
  • Electrical Unit Typically a battery powered and is what creates the electricity. From the unit you control the intensity and type of sensation that you feel.
  • Tens Unit stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and consists of a power box, electrical pads and wires that deliver a current of electricity from one pad to the other to stimulate the muscles so they contract, relax or flex.
  • Adapters Similar to other electrical devices, adapters connect different, normally non-compatible devices to each other so they can run a current through them safely and be used together.
  • Power Box The source of electricity meant to safely be used in electrosex. This is what electrosex gear and wires are attached to and is required for any electrosex play.

What is ElectroSex?

Electrosex, also known as electroplay or erotic electrostimulation (e-stim), is using electrodes, circuits and an electric box or power box to conduct low level currents through the body to stimulate and arouse someone and potentially to ejaculate from this electrifying stimulation alone.

E-stim devices run low-frequency electrical currents through the body and into different muscle groups and erogenous zones in order to stimulate the nerves or muscles for pleasure or pain. It has commonly been used to tone muscles, treat muscle injuries or to help with muscle pain.

To put it simply... Electricity is produced via a power box and runs through wires to a pad or attachment. In order to complete the circuit, two pads or attachments are used (one with electricity going out, the other with it going back to the box). When two pads or attachments are placed on the body at different locations, a current runs through the body and to the other attachment which causes muscles to contract, relax or both. This sensation can be very erotic to the receiver (and the giver, if they enjoy watching their partner squirm and react).

What Can You Do with ElectroSex Gear?

People who incorporate electroplay into their scenes find pleasure from the muscle contractions caused by electrical stimulation. Placed on or around erogenous zones, it can induce orgasm by contracting the muscles so they pulse, tense and relax. If done on a lower setting, it can be very euphoric. If turned on to a higher level, it can edge towards being painful.

Electricity causes muscle contractions and relaxation that arouse the receiver and often increase endorphin levels. People have described pads or wider attachments as giving the receiver a buzzy, tingly, warm, squeezing, throbbing or pulsing sensation. Some toys such as wands or rods deliver a sharp, piercing, prickly or cutting sensation.

Users love to place this on their cock (on the base and the shaft), balls, anus (inside to stimulate the prostate or A-spot or outside on the perineum), clitoris, labia or anywhere else below the waist.

Many people have discovered creative ways of using electricity to enhance their sexual play. The following are examples:

• Using electricity to induce orgasm.
• Using electroplay as foreplay.
• Enhancing sex by wearing electrosex gear on the genitals during intercourse so both partners feel it.
• Making masturbation more exciting by attaching electrosex gear to genitals.
• Combining electrosex gear with pre-recorded MP3 files played through an electrosex power box. These MP3s can be combined to create a playlist that literally lets the receiver get fucked by the music.
• Some people have found that e-stim helps with getting an erection and use it to help with ED (erectile dysfunction).

Trying it out for the first time?

To start with, try placing the pads or attachments on a large muscle group (such as the thigh) to play with the settings and get used to them.

For male genitalia: Place pads or attachments on the frenulum and perineum.
For female genitalia: Place pads or attachments on either side of the clitoris or vaginal opening.

Then, start low and slowly increase the levels until the desired intensity is reached, and edge towards climax!

Safety & Cleaning

Safety:

Do not use e-stim pads or TENS pads on head, neck, mouth, across the chest, on chest and upper back at the same time, varicose veins, irritated or infected skin or open wounds.
Wands and wand attachments can be used above the waist. Use good judgement.

Do not use on pregnant women without consulting a doctor.
Pregnancies can be complicated and, especially during the first trimester, it’s best to avoid any type of edgeplay to avoid complications or medical risks.

Use electroconductive gels.
Without the right lubrication, there is a greater risk of high-current skin burning. While it is possible to use water-based lubricants due to water being a conductor, it’s best to use gels specifically for this purpose such as the Zeus Incite Electrosex Gel. Do not use silicone as it is insulating and will block the currents.

Do not use with or near water!
Water carries the electrical current through it and can increase risk of electrocution. Be very careful about where the electrosex equipment is placed and where people are playing!

Do not submerge equipment in water to clean.
This not only is unsafe, it can damage the equipment and cause corrosion. The equipment needs to be taken care of correctly in order to safely function during the next play session.

Do NOT use this on people who have pacemakers!
The current can interrupt the function of the pacemaker and cause abnormal heart rhythm or damage the device that is keeping their heart beating.

Stay away from the heart. If a current is passed through the heart, it can cause ventricular fibrillation which is an abnormal heart rhythm.

Don’t place attachments on both nipples at the same time.
While it can be safe to play with the nipples (which are near the heart), if just starting out it’s best to avoid it. Using a bipolar (two channel) device can be safe when playing with one nipple at a time, but why risk it? If there is a chance of injuring a partner, then that partner could be hurt and not want to play again. Better safe than sorry.

Be cautious of what you touch while the device is turned on!
The person who is controlling the electrosex device may forget their hands are actually conductors, as well. If they accidentally touch someone before the circuit is closed, that electricity will go through their hand to wherever they touch. Avoid placing hands on the receiver’s heart, head, upper back and anywhere else that an attachment or pad should not be placed.

Do not use self-made devices.
Many self-made devices are not safe for use on the body and can cause accidental death by electrocution. These devices often have too much power and are not safely insulated.

To Clean:

Electrosex toys need to be cleaned differently than other sex toys. Because the units have a motor in them, and because water and electricity don’t safely mix, make sure to follow these steps when cleaning.

  • Unplug the device from the outlet.
  • Dis-assemble and take apart any loose pieces so it is easier to clean.
  • Wash the surface of equipment with a damp cloth, warm water and antibacterial soap.
  • Use a toothbrush to get into any hard-to-reach sections on the unit or accessories.
  • Make sure to wipe clean with a damp cloth (no soap) to remove any remaining soap residue.
  • Carefully dry the equipment with a cloth (microfiber cloth is recommended).
  • Let air dry to ensure the hard-to-reach areas completely dry out as well.

Note: Battery-operated toys require removing the batteries, cleaning following the directions above, and storing the batteries and unit/equipment separately until the next use.

Expert Tips & Advice

Keep in mind how electrical currents work for the best outcome.
In order for electricity to flow through the body it flows from a positive electrode to a negative one. A bi-polar accessory is complete and connects the circuits so you can feel it by gripping the device tightly. Mono-polar devices require two uni-polar devices hooked up to the body to complete the circuit.

Use the electrostim on yourself first.
In order to get a better understanding of how powerful the electrical charge is on any given setting, and how sensitive different areas of the body are, place the pads or attachments on yourself before doing this on a partner.

Start low and build slow.
Pain tolerance varies day by day. If someone enjoyed level 5 one day, they may find it painful or overwhelming the next. Hormones, lack of sleep or even just stress can interfere with pain tolerance. So start low and slowly build until the desired level is found and adjust this per scene.

Shave areas that pads are being placed on.
While this isn’t necessary, it can be a good idea considering the pads are sticky and so they may not stick flat to the skin if there is too much hair and can pull or tug on hair during removal, irritating the sensitive skin.

When placing pads on skin, make sure to stretch out the skin so there are no wrinkles or folds.
If a pad sticks to an area of the skin that has folds, it can be very uncomfortable. Take off the pad and reapply it so that it lays flat against the surface of the skin.

Allergic to the sticky pads?
If noticing red inflammation it may be due to the glue on the sticky pad. Hypoallergenic pads can be purchased in lieu of the regular TENS pads. Additionally, switching to conductive silicone adhesive pads can sometimes make a difference.

FAQ

Should I connect e-stim devices to two different people at the same time?
Generally speaking, you can do this. However, the risk of accidentally sending a current through them in a way that is unsafe or unintentional is high and thus should be avoided.

Can I use electrosex gear on someone’s nipples?
If they do not have a heart condition or a pacemaker, and the attachments are bipolar (have two channels), it should be safe. It is still edge play and risky, so be careful not to do anything that would run a current through the heart. The key is to get fully isolated clamps that don’t have current running between them and to only do one nipple at a time.

Do I need to be careful about muscle contractions?
This isn’t really a problem when attached to genitals like the anus, vagina or penis. If the current is running through the legs or arms, don’t jump the power level up too quickly or it could cause the legs or muscles to buckle and aggressively cramp. This can be a problem if they are bound and can’t move easily, or could result in their legs/arms buckling so that they collapse and fall.

Only use equipment that is meant for the human body.
Experimenting with shock devices meant for other animals or equipment could result in serious injury or damage to the electrosex equipment.

Can I use electrosex equipment made by different companies?
Yes! There are a selection of adapters that allow for safely using and combining equipment from different manufacturers.

Can I use electrosex equipment on the neck or head?
Short answer, no. Generally speaking, using electrosex gear above the waist can be dangerous and most manufacturers will warn against it. However, people do use attachments such as clamps on the nipples, but it comes with risk to the heart (see above). Using it on the neck or head is even more risky and should be avoided.
