I hope that everyone has a fantastic Halloween weekend. Whether you’re partying it up on the town, or staying indoors to partake in the monster movie marathon, enjoy the weekend responsibly.

The crew around here got pretty creative with their costumes. I showed up as an airline pilot, our IT guy arrived as Orgazmo with a very interesting twinge to it. Jennifer, our wholesale manager was decorated as a stylish bumblebee. We’ve seen PJs and such around here too.

Our president, oh well he showed up in the most fitting outfit of them all.. a pimp. That’s right Ole’ Supafly Prez, keeping everything locked down and air tight in this operation. =) I’m interested to hear your Halloween tales of outfits, parties and romps. While visiting the Venus show in Berlin, Germany, the thing I found most interesting is where the line at which things are considered ‘fetish’.

In the U.S. we have been changing that line in our everyday media very rapidly in the last few years. Examples are dildos and vibrators in TV shows aired during prime time. Dominatrixes and latex or leather clad nubile young females and males in mainstream magazine advertisements. Giggling references to whips and chains on radio shows… that kind of thing doesn’t create the ’sinsation’ that it once used to. It’s not taboo either, it is out there. Open any magazine and chances are you’ll see something that was not allowed 50 years ago. In Germany, latex and leather fashions and floggers are found in the main sex toy areas. They aren’t ’separate’ or ‘naughty’. German’s seem to reserve ‘fetish’ for S and M and true fetishes. They do not pollute their sex by falsely using the word fetish to mean less that it really does. Here in the United States we misuse words all the time. Fetish is one of the ones our sex marketing people have very much abused.

Will we continue to misuse the word fetish in our stores? You bet we will, because now in the United States, the word ‘fetish’ applies to much more than just items or acts necessary to obtain an orgasm. In the United States it applies to a wide gamut fashion items and sex acts… which really are just part of the normal reparatoire of human sexual expression.

Is wearing a latex dress a fetish? Not really, unless the wearer absolutely has to wear latex to get off. Latex dresses certainly are sexy though! I love the smell of leather, it makes my pussy wet. Do I have to sniff leather to get off? Nope. Will it help get me in the mood to have sex. YEP! Feathers? Dang some girls look pretty in them, some guys too. But all they do is make me sneeze.

In the United States, all these things are considered fetish. In Europe.. not so much.

At Venus the fetish area contained items and videos that in the United States would be considered ‘hard core’ or extreme in the United States. Video loops of pussy bondage, penis sounding, whipping, blood play etc. were looping on huge video screens.

Items we in the U.S. consider fetish such as latex clothing, whips, chastity belts and cock lock up devices were displayed in the main stream sex toy areas of the Venus show. Rightfully, I felt.

Some items were displayed in both areas, such as leather restraints. The lightweight ones were in both areas, while the heavy duty (very functional) leather were located in the fetish area. Dungeon gear such as stocks and cages were in the fetish area too.

The Venus show in Berlin was great fun. Venus was much like all my non industry friends imagine the AVN Expo to be. They all claim they want to go with me when I attend. But at the last minute they all ‘chicken’ out. It’s probably a good thing, because with all the business dinners and meetings going there isn’t much time to spend with non industry friends.

How was Venus different from the conventions in the United States? Live porn websites were broadcasting live sex acts. These acts had women fisting themselves, butt fisting themselves, some girl on girl stuff going on. In the gay area, some of the hottest male models were doing strip acts and simulating sex acts. That was H-O-T HOT! How come watching gay guys make me horny?

There was a porn movie try out audition going on. That was interesting. One girl was obviously excited but a bit shy while waiting her turn. The audience was intent on watching these live try outs. Once the action got going though, the girl obviously knew her stuff, she managed to look very natural while keeping things available for view by the cameras. I’m not so sure she was a ‘novice’.

Watching all this, I learned that porn shoots are very difficult to do, having a director talking to you while you are having sex, telling you to move your leg, arm, or what to do, or go deeper, harder, slower, faster. All the time you have to look interested in what is going on. It certainly isn’t a simple thing to do, and anyone who thinks they can be porn star, is sadly mistaken. It does take talent.

I recently visited Germany for a working vacation. My goal was to drive around Germany, get a feel for sex shops in Deutschland, enjoy the country, and to end up in Berlin and the Venus convention.

Germany is beautiful. I especially enjoyed southwest Germany. In the fall the forests are gorgeous riots of color. The giant tall straight pine trees of the densely wooded Black Forest still inspire dreams of trolls, princesses, giants, ogres, fairies and elves. I also managed side trips to Dachau, Nurnberg and other important historic sites that no one should ever forget. It was very interesting to visit the National History Museum of Germany. There are frightening parallels in their pre WWII history and what is happening in our US politics today and in recent years. What with taking away our privacy protections and more and more socialism being instituted and the like, It’s all happened before and the results were disasterous. I’ll save my political commentary for my personal blog though.

Germans are very open about sexuality. Nudity is not something to be feared or hidden. The legacy of the Roman empire in the form of public spas and baths is alive and well. Men and woman attend these baths in the nude and there isn’t any kind of bother about it. The guys don’t get all drooley and the women don’t stare at the men either. Couples aren’t copulating in every corner. Nudity is just a state of being. And while you are steaming in the sauna it doesn’t make sense to cover up your pores. It’s all very practical.
